Description

For my illustration III class- the assignment was to make a portrait of someone who has been dead at least 100 years. I wanted to do a female knight (and not Jeanne d'Arc) so here is Sikelgaita-
A Lombard princess born c. 1040 and who fought alongside her Norman king/husband against the Byzantines. She fought courageously in battle and often likened to the goddess Athena for her valor.

100% Photoshop ~~

There are no paintings of her that I could find so I just took what reference I could find of her empire and of armor back during those ages (thus the helmet).
Hopefully it is pretty accurate =]

You have got the facts the other way around. Her husband, Robert Guiscard, was the scion of a poor knight from Normandy, Tancred de Hauteville. When he had arrived in Southern Italy, which was then under Byzantine rule. After he and his brothers had successfully defeated a papal army in the Battle of Civitate in 1053, Pope Leo IX sanctioned his rule as "Duke of Calabria and Apulia."

In 1081, he led an invasion against Byzantium, defeating the Emperor Alexius I at Dyracchium. He was recalled in 1083 to Italy relieve the siege of Rome by Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV. His son, Bohemund, could not hold the previous Norman conquests, and his father returned in 1085. He succeeded in conquering Corfu and Kefalonia, but died of fever in his 70th year.
